200 Stab Wounds – Piles of Festering Decomposition (2020) Review

Piles of Festering Decomposition is the first release from Cleveland death metal band 200 Stab Wounds. I’ll admit up front when I first heard this EP I got more than a little obsessed. From the opening track, I was hooked. “Maggot Casket” is Two and a half minutes of sonic brutality. “Body in the Basement” is up next, more melodic but just as brutal. Track three, slower but equally savage “She Was Already Dead” might be my favorite.

The original release just included these three songs and clocked in at 7:42. Later releases added “Digested Desire” and an outstanding rendition of Carcass’ “Ruptured in Purulence”, extending the run time by more than 6 minutes. Guitarist/vocalist Steve Buhl has a particular style of vocal growls with not much emphasis on enunciation, but it works well on this EP.

Signed to Maggot Stomp Records, 200 Stab Wounds came from out of nowhere with Piles of Festering Decomposition and became a big deal seemingly overnight. Can they sustain this level of output or is this EP an anomaly? Stay tuned to find out. 5/5
